About Makawao

Makawao, Olinda, and Hāliʻimaile form the artistic and historic heart of Upcountry Maui. Makawao is known as a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town, full of Western charm, eclectic boutiques, and art galleries. Strolling through town feels like a step back in time—but with coffee shops, yoga studios, and farm-to-table restaurants giving it a modern twist.

Just above Makawao, Olinda winds through eucalyptus forests and pastureland, offering larger acreage properties, cooler temps, and a real sense of seclusion. It’s a favorite for writers, creatives, and nature lovers who want space and serenity. Many homes here are tucked into the trees with views of the North Shore or Haleakalā’s peak.

Hāliʻimaile, below Makawao, is a small plantation-style village known for its pineapple history and local food scene. Homes here are quaint, often with vintage character, and just minutes from both Upcountry and Central Maui.

This trio of towns offers something for everyone—historic charm, forested retreats, and agricultural opportunity. Whether you’re drawn to the vibrant local art scene or simply want a peaceful mountain home, Makawao, Olinda, and Hāliʻimaile are full of charm, community, and possibility.
